Mould Eradication
The
occurrence of black mould in homes has increased dramatically in the past
decade, mainly due to an increase in dampness resulting from condensation within
buildings. The condensation is due to
several factors, including lack of heating, inadequate ventilation and the use
of paraffin and LPG heaters. An
additional factor is the modernisation of buildings, making them airtight and
draft-free. Airtight buildings are
more energy efficient, but lack the ventilation and airflow necessary to remove
condensation from the structures. These
factors have caused a tenfold increase in condensation in homes in the past
decade.
The
dampness from the condensation remains in the walls and ceilings, and is a
prime breeding ground for black mould.
Ordinary
mould spores are dormant and all structures have mould spores within their
walls and ceilings. With an increase in
continued dampness within a building the mould spores germinate and explode
into a black, disfiguring growth.
Once
the mould begins to grow, it is extremely difficult to control and will spread
along walls, ceilings and carpet. If
left unchecked, it will also spread to furniture and clothing and destroy
them. The mould gives off an obnoxious
musty smell when the spores spread and become airborne.
Black Mould is a
Serious Health Risk
Black
mould has been proven to pose a serious risk to everyone exposed to it. The British Medical Journal Report, Damp Housing, Mould Growth and Symptomatic Health State
(24/6/89) confirms that active spores, even in small concentrations, can have
an adverse effect on the health of both adults and children. When exposed to mould, people are at an
increased risk of respiratory infections, allergic rhinitis and asthma. Certain groups are at more risk than others,
including babies and children, the elderly, people who suffer from existing
skin conditions such as eczema, who already have respiratory conditions or who
are immune-compromised (for example, chemotherapy patients).
Studies
have shown the link between mould infestations and increased instances of
certain illnesses. For example, it is
estimated that 1 in 4 asthma sufferers in the UK have the disease due to exposure
to mould and inhalation of the airborne spores.
Airborne
spores can also contaminate food, leading to food poisoning, as noted in
Environmental Health Professional Practice - Mould Fungal Spores report (1985).
We Can
Solve Your Problem
It
is not enough to treat the mould you can see.
By the time you can see or smell the mould in your home, it has infected
your walls and ceilings and is in the air you are breathing. It is best to think of it like an iceberg -
you only see about a third of the problem.
The remaining two thirds consists of a complex root system deep within your walls, floors and ceilings.
Mould
remediation and eradication should be handled by trained professionals who are
able to find and eliminate the mould wherever it is growing. Simply
cleaning the mould with bleach and water will not work, as that solution only
kills the mould you can see.
We will assess your problem and determine the appropriate
course of treatment. The mould removal
process includes
- Determination of the cause of the black mould infestation
- Identification of all areas where mould is growing, including
within walls and the building substrates
- Treatment of the affected areas, and a buffer beyond the
affected area, with the correct chemicals to kill the mould and prevent
re-growth
- Control of airborne spores to minimize exposure and re-growth
- Painting and decoration of the treated areas to make them look
like new.
Our treatment solutions are designed to minimize any disruption to your
household or business and will limit treatment to the affected areas. However, we will treat all affected areas and our solutions prevent the return of the
mould.
We
deal with all types of mould remediation and eradication, from small areas and crawl spaces to commercial buildings.
Our professional staff have the expertise, equipment and experience to
eliminate black mould from your home or building.
Our
solutions are cost-effective - we assess the problem, treat the mould and
prevent re-growth. We finish the job by
decorating the treated areas to look like new.
